CLEO Announces Their Make Me a Makeup Artist Winner
CLEO Magazine announced the recent winner of their Make Me a Makeup Artist competition, sponsored by Priceline. The winner is Jaclyn Hnitko!
CLEO Magazine recently held a makeup artist competition in search of the most talented make-up artist. Of the thousands of applications that they received, the judges had to cut them down to just four competitors. Each make-up artist competed for ,000, courtesy of Priceline, a L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Makeup Kit worth ,500, and the opportunity to be a guest make-up artist on a six-page shoot in CLEO magazine.
In order to enter make-up artists, both amateurs and professionals, had to create a makeup look with various beauty products and send in a photo. They also had to answer a range of questions and send in a photo of themselves.
The make-up artists that made it to the competition were Amelia Axton, Ava Belle, Phoebe Goulding and Jaclyn Hnitko. During the competition, which was broadcasted via makeup webisode series, each make-up artist had to compete in several different tasks in order to prove their ability using beauty products. The competitions consisted of The Natural Bronze Challenge, The Smoky Eye Challenge, The Bold Statement Lip, and the final challenge, which was free style. They preformed these challenges before a panel of judges.
These panel of judges consisted of professionals from the beauty field. They were Anna Hull, Head Beauty Buyer for Priceline; Rae Morris, L’Oreal Paris Make-up Artist; and Rachael Mannell, Beauty Editor for CLEO Magazine.
Hnitko emerged victorious because of her “impeccable technical skills, brilliant grasp of colour and artistic flair,” according to www.priceline.com.au.
Hnitko is from Wentworthville, New South Wales. When asked why she decided to be a make-up artist, she said, “So I can work in the industry most girls dream of! I’d love my creativity, skills and knowledge to be seen in various forms of work, from beauty to advertising.” Hnitko said that when she found out that she had been chosen to compete in the Make Me A Makeup Artist competition, she thought somebody was playing a bad joke on her. When asked whose makeup she would most want to do, Hnitko said Lady Gaga. She explained, “she is very open-minded and a trendsetter. Plus, her high profile will be able to propel my work into the mainstream and give me either positive or negative feedback.”
Priceline issued the following statement through their website regarding the makeup artist competition: “Priceline is immensely proud to have been the major sponsor of this competition and wishes all the finalists the best of luck for a bright future in the makeup industry.”

The process of finding a makeup artist you trust can be daunting, especially if you will be attending a big event where you will be the guest of honour, such as your wedding. How can you be sure to find a makeup artist whose service you will be happy with?
A reputable company. If possible, contact a makeup artist through a company that has a great reputation. Find out how the company does their hiring. Do they typically hire people right out of school, or do they prefer to hire artists with more experience? If the event is high profile, you will need a company who specializes in creating makeup looks that will look great when photographed or on captured on film. Ask around to find the company with the best credentials and highest rate of success.
Do a test run. Hire the makeup artist before the event a few weeks prior to do a test run. Wear the same outfit you will be wearing. If you like the look, you can hire them again to do the same thing on your big day. Explain to the artist that if the test run goes well, you will hire them for the event. Do this well ahead of time. Lauren DeQuirozâs journey to Federico Beauty Institute took a couple of detoursâ¦but those detours were invaluable life lessons that led to a very positive outcome.
Although Lauren always knew she wanted to go to beauty school, she also felt it was important to experience college life. Lauren attended University of Colorado, Boulder for two years before pursuing her dream to become a hair stylist.
Lauren enrolled in an 1800-hour Cosmetology program at a franchise school in the Denver area. But a third of the way through the program, Lauren knew the school was not right for her. She observed very quickly that the schoolâs curriculum didnât include materials or student exercises on what it takes to pass the State Boards (Licensure is a requirement to practice Cosmetology in most States).
Finding the Right Pivot Point School
Lauren began her search for a beauty school that met her requirementsâ¦.a combination of hands-on, real-life practical training in a salon-like environment coupled with a curriculum consisting of rigorous âdrillsâ for students on passing the State Boards. A third factor — locating a school that taught the Pivot Point curriculum â was equally important.
Lauren had become familiar with Pivot Point at the beauty school in Denver. Pivot Point equipment, like tripods, was used at the school along with Pivot Pointâs book, âSalon Fundamentals.â  Lauren asked and soon learned that the Denver school WAS NOT Pivot Point Certified, and had no plans to change their curriculum in the future.
She began an extensive research project to find the right beauty school that met her criteria. She spent a lot of time on the Pivot Point Academy website and became sold on the Pivot Point hair and skin care education.Â

 Equally impressive was Federicoâs responsiveness. Lauren said, âMost schools I called werenât very helpful or willing to quickly send me the information I needed to make a decision. Federico was very proactive…sending me the information I requested right away, then communicating with me via email on a daily basis.
The final step was a campus tour of Federicoâs Sacramento campus. Lauren found the staff even more personable and helpful than they were on the phone. She liked the fact that the main office was on site and everyone she needed to meet with â admissions, financial services, career services â was in the same building.
The following factors âsealed the dealâ for Lauren:
1)Â Â Â Federico has been in the beauty school business for over 60 years;
2)Â Â Â Federico is a Pivot Point International member school;
3)Â Â Â According to the Federicoâs catalog, the schoolâs Educational Goal is âdesignated to assist the studentâs capability to pass the Bureau of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing examination.â
4)Â Â Â An externship program that places students in Sacramento-area beauty salons;
one day a week, in place of going to class, students can observe the work of experienced beauty professionals.
A Bright Future
Lauren graduated from Federicoâs Cosmetology program on Monday, December 22nd, 2008.
She will now put the finishing touches on her resume with Federicoâs Student Services support. She would like to find a salon in the Stockton CA area â about an hour from Sacramento â to be closer to some family and friends.
